13 Nissan: Knowing the Unknown
KNOWING THE UNKNOWN
If you will follow My statutes..., I will give your rains....
(Leviticus 26:3-4)
A chok, or statute, is a command that we do not understand but fulfill simply because it is G-d’s decree. These decrees train us not to be limited by our understandi ng, by the essential limitation of the mind. The reason is that intellect requires objectivity that holds us back from fully experiencing our subject.
Paradoxically, to truly understand something, we must first immerse ourselves in the experience, suspending our objectivity. Only later can we step back and truly understand. Experiencing a chok is the best way to understand it. Similarly, experiencing the era of Moshiach is the best way to understand it!
