30 Shvat: Love for the Land
LOVE FOR THE LAND
When G-d decreed that the Jewish People wander forty years in the desert, He also decreed that the men twenty or over at the time would not enter the Land. Yet the women were not included, as our sages note:
However this decree was not imposed upon the women, because the land was dear to them. The men said (Bamidbar 14:4), “Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt.” In contrast, the women (the daughters of Tzelofchad) requested (Bamidbar 27:4), “Give us a portion in the land.”
(Rashi, Bamidbar 26:64)
We see that women have a superior love, faith, and yearning for the Redemption and the Promised Land. When faced with the possibility of losing an ancestral inheritance in Israel through marriage, they demanded, “Give us a portion in the land!” We must learn from their emunah (faith) and bitachon (confident belief) and not be fazed by apparent obstacles to the Redemption.
